Ideas from Literacy Work Stations: Making Centers Work

by Debbie Diller

What are literacy work stations?

A literacy work station is a place in the classroom where students work alone or with other students using instructional materials to practice reading and literacy skills. While in the stations students will practice reading, writing, listening, speaking, and working with words.

For the first nine weeks of school work stations focus will be on developing fluency.

Buddy Reading Work Station

During Buddy Reading students can:

  • Read with a buddy.
  • Take turns reading a page.
  • One student reads then the other student echos them.

Listening Work Station

During the listening work station the student can

  • turn the page with the beep.
  • Read along with the book.
  • Talk with a partner about the book.
  • Draw a picture about their favorite part.

Big Book Work Station

During the Big Book work stations students can

  • Use a pointer to point to the words while they read.
  • Read a Big Book with a partner.
  • Find words they know and put highlighter tape on them.
